TL;DR
"Ranking" in ChatGPT doesn't work the way ranking in Google does.
There's no position one and no page two in AI search.
ChatGPT gives an answer.
Your brand is either mentioned in it, cited as a source with a link, both, or neither.
There's no secret ChatGPT ranking checklist.
OpenAI publishes how to make your site eligible for ChatGPT search.
It says results are ranked on multiple factors and that placement isn't guaranteed.
It doesn't publish how ChatGPT picks sources.
Across our own site and client campaigns, the pattern is consistent: strong SEO gets you considered.
Getting selected comes down to four things. Crawlers can read your pages, the rest of the web backs you up, you say something nobody else can, and you can prove your expertise.
That's what our SOURCE framework covers: Structure, Offsite, Uniqueness, Relevance, Credibility and Evaluation.
Before you change anything, find out what ChatGPT says about you now.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Sourced | ChatGPT names you and cites one of your pages |
| Considered | ChatGPT names you, but the cited sources belong to someone else |
| Invisible | You're not named at all |
Test from the US, since ChatGPT estimates your approximate location for local prompts.
Treat one run as a snapshot.
Answers change day to day.
Structure is the foundation.
If crawlers can't reach or read a page, nothing else in this guide matters.
OpenAI's crawler documentation explains that each bot is controlled separately:
| Crawler | What it's for | What blocking it does |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfacing sites in ChatGPT's search features | Your pages won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. You can still appear as a navigational link |
| GPTBot | Crawling content that may be used to train OpenAI's models | Opts you out of training. OpenAI treats it as a separate setting from search |
| ChatGPT-User | Fetching a page when a user asks ChatGPT to | OpenAI says it isn't used to decide search inclusion, and robots.txt may not apply |
So allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to be cited.
Blocking GPTBot is a training-data decision and doesn't change whether you appear in ChatGPT search. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply to search, and recommends allowing its published OAI-SearchBot IP ranges.
Cloudflare, your host or a bot-protection rule can block OAI-SearchBot before it ever reaches your robots.txt. OpenAI's ChatGPT search help page lists two steps for eligibility: allow OAI-SearchBot, and make sure your host or CDN allows traffic from its published IP addresses.
It's one of the most common issues we find. Check your CDN bot rules, then look in your server logs for OAI-SearchBot requests returning 403s or challenge pages.
Many AI crawlers don't render JavaScript like Googlebot does. If key copy, products or pricing load client-side, the crawler may see little more than a nav bar.
Fetch a page as OAI-SearchBot, or use Hawk Academy's Can AI See Your Page? check, and search the output for your headline and a key selling point.
If they're missing, look at JavaScript SEO fixes such as server-side rendering or pre-rendering.
Get indexed in Bing as well as Google. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers, but it doesn't publish which results come from where. Verifying Bing Webmaster Tools and submitting a sitemap takes little time and covers that base.
Give each service, category or location its own page, so retrieval systems have one clear match for each topic.
For pages you want kept out, use noindex. The crawler has to be able to fetch the page to see that tag.
An llms.txt file is optional.
SE Ranking's analysis of roughly 300,000 domains found no measurable link between having one and being cited.
Fix access and raw HTML first.
For Australian furniture brand Cooper & Co, Structure meant a mapped 74-URL information architecture, one consolidated product schema block in place of two competing ones, and an AI information page.
AI-referred sessions grew 10x year on year.
That came from SEO and Digital PR working together.

ChatGPT also reads what other websites say about you.
Independent sources that confirm your claims carry more weight than anything on your own site. These are the ones that usually do that work:
Skip directory spam, mass guest posts, planted promotional comments and self-published "best [category]" listicles that rank you first. They're easy to see through.
JobAdder, a global recruitment software platform, turned its own hiring data into State of the Market reports and expert commentary. The campaign earned 58 media placements and 38 backlinks, and Australian organic clicks rose 316%.
Action: Take the cited domains from your visibility test and list the five where competitors appear and you don't. Those are your first PR and outreach targets.
If your page says what ten others already say, ChatGPT has no reason to cite you.
Uniqueness means information gain: something a model can't assemble from other people's pages. That might be:
For Genea Fertility, an Australian clinic network, we analyzed anonymized patient and donor records from 2022 to 2025, a dataset no competitor could publish. Its fertility specialists checked every figure. The campaign earned 44 pieces of coverage, and Google AI Overview placements grew from 89 to 191.
That's a Google result. We include it because the same idea applies to ChatGPT: original data gives AI systems something new to cite.
Cooper & Co built its own dataset from 545 Reddit comments about Australians' renovation regrets. Alongside expert advice from its Head of Homewares, its Digital PR earned 151 pieces of coverage between January and September 2026.
Action: List three things your business knows that nobody else has published. Turn one into a data-led article or asset this quarter.

OpenAI's help center says that when ChatGPT search uses outside search providers, it typically rewrites a prompt into one or more targeted queries. After reviewing the first results, it may send more specific follow-up queries.
That's query fan-out.
"Best travel insurance for a family trip to Japan" might fan out into pre-existing conditions, cruise coverage, deductibles and claim times. One page targeting one head term misses most of them.
To cover those sub-questions, build a pillar page with a supporting page for each one, and link them together with descriptive anchors. Keep informational, comparison and buying intent on separate pages.
Decision-stage content gets you into shortlist prompts: pricing, comparisons, "is it right for me" guides and FAQs that deal with objections.
Under each heading, give the direct answer in the first line or two, then the detail. Use tables for comparisons.
Cooper & Co had an authority score of 14, too low to win "mirrors", so we built out the subcategories beneath it. LED mirrors went from 170 to 1,823 clicks.
Those are Google clicks. Covering sub-topics this way is also what fan-out queries reward.
Action: Take your top commercial page, list ten questions a buyer asks before purchasing, and check which ones have a clear, linked answer on your site.

Credibility covers what Google calls E-E-A-T. Every claim you make should be easy to verify.
Check your site for:
InsureandGo Australia sells travel insurance, a "your money or your life" category where trust carries a lot of weight.
We rebuilt its awards, reviews and testimonials as crawlable text and schema, and made its Head of Product a named expert across product and content pages. The About page now covers its track record, underwriting, industry standing, and its separation from an unrelated UK company with the same name.
"Travel insurance" moved from position 19 to 2, and money-page clicks grew from 176 to 2,098 per month between August 2025 and August 2026.
Action: Audit your About page and top three author bios against this list. Fix the first missing or inconsistent fact everywhere it appears.
Resource: How To Win Visibility In ChatGPT, Gemini & AI Overviews
You can measure AI visibility in three layers. Each one is incomplete, so read them together.
Write 10 to 20 prompts that cover research, comparison and decision questions in your buyers' own words. Run the same prompts each month in fresh, unpersonalized sessions. For each one, record:
For InsureandGo, we tracked 40 prompts across ChatGPT, AI Overviews and AI Mode in Peec.ai. Where a competitor was cited and InsureandGo was missing, we briefed content to close the gap, then measured again. AI share of voice rose from 32% in March 2026 to 56%, the highest in its competitor set. That figure combines all three platforms.
chatgpt.com.Plenty of AI influence never shows up as a referral. People copy links, switch devices or search your brand later. Track these as well:
Cooper & Co's tracking found 476 AI brand mentions, 152 of them in ChatGPT. We report those mentions alongside AI-referred sessions and sales, since a mention on its own doesn't show revenue.
Prompt tracking shows visibility, and analytics shows some of the clicks. Report them together, because neither proves on its own that ChatGPT caused a sale.
Action: Lock in your prompt library and a baseline this month. Same prompts, same method, every month.
Resource: What Your Board Is Asking About AI Search (And the Honest Answer)
| When | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 14 | Baseline and Structure | Run the visibility test and set up your prompt library. Check OAI-SearchBot access in robots.txt and your CDN. Fetch key pages without JavaScript. Verify Bing Webmaster Tools. Set up AI referral reporting in GA4 and Clarity. |
| Days 15 to 45 | Your weakest pillar | Use your test results to pick one. Invisible usually points to Structure or Offsite. Considered usually points to Relevance or Uniqueness. Wrong facts usually point to Credibility. |
| Days 46 to 75 | Publish something original | Ship one data-led asset, tool or first-hand guide, then pitch it to the publications ChatGPT already cites in your category. |
| Days 76 to 90 | Re-measure | Re-run the same prompts. Compare mentions, citations and framing with your baseline, alongside AI referrals, branded demand and leads. Choose the next pillar. |
Ninety days is enough to fix access and set a baseline. Offsite authority and credibility take longer to build, so plan to run the cycle again.
That's up to you. OpenAI controls GPTBot (training) separately from OAI-SearchBot (search). Blocking GPTBot doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search. Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps your pages out of its search answers.
It helps. In our experience, strong organic visibility makes you more likely to be considered. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers but doesn't say which results come from where, so it's worth being well indexed in both.
Crawler access is quick to fix. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply to ChatGPT search. Building offsite authority and credibility takes months.
Ranking on ChatGPT builds on the same work as good SEO. The measure is whether the answer mentions and cites you.
