TL;DR
WordPress is a content management system.
You log in, change pages, install plugins, and ship without touching code.
As of early November 2026, W3Techs reports WordPress on 58.2% of sites with a known CMS, and about 39.5% of all websites.
Your designer almost certainly defaults to it.
See the live market share on W3Techs’ WordPress page.
Claude Code is different.
It is Anthropic’s agentic coding tool: it reads a codebase, edits files, runs commands, and works from the terminal, IDE, desktop or web.
As of November 6, 2026, Claude Code is included on Claude’s paid plans: Pro at US$20/month (US$17/month billed annually), Max at US$100/month, and Ultra at US$200/month — all billed in USD.
It is not a website builder.
And it does not host your site.
When people say they “built the site with Claude Code,” they mean they prompted it to generate a modern stack (often Astro, Next.js or plain static HTML), then deployed that code to Vercel, Netlify or Cloudflare Pages.
Typical Claude Code website design job:
For WordPress technical SEO on the US stack, see our WordPress SEO Agency Services. For AI-crawler myths versus HTML-first builds, see Is llms.txt Worth It?. The Claude + WordPress build walkthrough stays on Hawk Academy.
No.
Both can rank in Google.
Both can be cited in AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity.
We run WordPress clients and code-built sites that perform.
Here’s the thing.
The platform is a constraint on how you maintain crawlable pages, answer-first content and authority — not a ranking factor of its own.
What actually moves visibility:
Google’s own guidance is blunt: AI Overviews are rooted in core ranking systems.
The work that wins citations is mostly SEO done properly, which we break down in How To Win Visibility In ChatGPT, Gemini & AI Overviews.
So the useful question is not “which one does Google like?”
It is “which setup lets your business keep shipping the pages search and AI can actually use?”
| Factor | WordPress | Claude Code-built site |
|---|---|---|
| Crawlability | Strong defaults; plugin sitemaps | Excellent if SSR/SSG; risk if CSR shell |
| Rendering / JS | PHP HTML by default; builders add JS | You choose; protect first HTML |
| Core Web Vitals | Fine if lean; easy to wreck | Often faster; still need CDN/images |
| Schema | Yoast / Rank Math | Hand-built JSON-LD; feed real facts |
| Sitemaps & canonicals | Plugin-managed | Generate and protect; agents can overwrite |
| AI crawlers | OK if content in HTML; check robots.txt | Many AI bots never run JS — ship HTML |
The AI search angle is the one most “WordPress vs Claude” posts skip.
Googlebot can render JavaScript (imperfectly).
ClaudeBot, Claude-User and most other AI fetchers take the first HTML response as the whole truth.
That’s why a lean static or server-rendered Claude Code site can look like an AI-search advantage.
And why a client-rendered vibe-coded app can be invisible.
For Claude-specific reading rules, see Hawk Academy’s Claude Visibility guide.
WordPress’s advantage is the SEO plugin layer.
Yoast or Rank Math give non-technical marketers title and meta editors, XML sitemaps, basic schema, breadcrumbs, canonical controls and redirect helpers.
That is real operational leverage for a US marketer who publishes weekly.
Claude Code’s advantage is control without plugin tax.
Wire metadata APIs, absolute canonicals, robots.txt, a route-based sitemap and Organization / LocalBusiness / FAQ schema into the framework.
Put the rules in a CLAUDE.md so the agent does not casually rewrite redirects next month.
A hybrid pattern we like: keep WordPress for publishing, use Claude Code against the theme, templates and APIs for bulk technical fixes.
Details live in our Claude Code SEO automation guide.
WordPress lets a marketer draft, schedule and fix a typo without opening a terminal.
For a national content team shipping several posts a week, that is the job.
Maintenance means core, theme and plugin updates.
Prefer managed hosting with a US region when latency matters.
A Claude Code site usually means Markdown or TSX in a repo.
A non-developer can drive changes through Claude Code, but someone still needs appetite for the terminal, deploys and review.
Prompting is brilliant for creating pages.
It is terrible for nudging a button three pixels.
That last ten per cent is a mouse job, which is why the WordPress and Claude hybrid build exists if you stay on WordPress: design in Claude, rebuild with native builder elements, finish with the mouse.
Local discoverability is mostly not decided by the stack.
For a local US practice like Classic Vision Care, Google Business Profile, NAP consistency, reviews, useful local landing pages and accurate LocalBusiness schema matter more than your CMS logo.
Pick the stack your team will actually update when you open a second location — the same crawlable foundations that support AI referral growth in campaigns like Jaipur Living.
If local is your growth channel, start with solid local SEO foundations.
Prices move with FX and promotions.
As of November 6, 2026, Claude and many hosts bill in USD.
Figures below are in USD.
| Cost line | WordPress (typical US SMB) | Claude Code marketing site |
|---|---|---|
| Platform / tool | Free (self-hosted) | Pro US$20/mo (US$17/mo annual); Max US$100/mo; Ultra US$200/mo |
| Hosting | SiteGround StartUp from about US$2.99–3.99/mo intro (renews higher); WP Engine Essential from US$28/mo billed annually (live USD plans page, November 6, 2026) | Often free hobby tier; Vercel/Netlify Pro about US$20/mo |
| Build | Thousands to tens of thousands | Design still costs; build cheaper with Claude |
| Ongoing edits | Staff time in wp-admin | Staff time driving Claude + deploys |
Stay on WordPress (or Shopify for serious retail) if you sell real stock with cart and inventory, need logins or memberships, or publish constantly with a team that will not touch code.
Claude Code (static / Next / Astro) is a genuine option if you run a brochure, portfolio or local service site, have someone with code appetite (or a technical partner) and a few hours a week to drive changes, and want lean HTML for AI crawlers.

Platform choice sits under the same fundamentals we outline in Google Says AI Search Fundamentals Are Still SEO Fundamentals.
The tool does not get you found.
The content and technical foundations do.
Choose WordPress when your business needs a CMS and people who are not developers must publish safely.
Use Claude Code when your site is mostly pages, you can own a modern static or SSR stack, and you want lean HTML that AI crawlers can read without running JavaScript.
Use both when WordPress is non-negotiable but you still want Claude’s speed on design and technical execution.
If you only remember one line: optimize for the reader and for the first HTML response.
Do that on either platform and you are in the game for Google, AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity.

No. Google does not hand WordPress a ranking bonus.
It ranks URLs that are crawlable, useful and trustworthy.
A slow, thin WordPress site loses to a fast, substantive static site, and the reverse is also true.
Only if the build ships important content in the initial HTML and you do not block AI crawlers.
Claude Code makes that easy to get right and easy to get wrong.
Client-side-only rendering is a common failure mode for AI engines that never execute JavaScript.
Yes, with discipline.
Inventory every URL, keep slugs where you can, 301 everything that changes, carry titles, descriptions, canonicals and schema, and monitor Search Console after launch.
Rankings are usually lost to broken redirects and missing pages, not to leaving PHP.
You need some way to manage titles, schema, sitemaps and canonicals.
Yoast and Rank Math remain the practical default for most US small businesses.
They do not replace content quality or digital PR.
Keep Google Business Profile complete, match NAP everywhere, build useful location or service pages, and add accurate LocalBusiness schema.
That checklist is platform-agnostic.
Pick the stack your team will update when trading hours change.
If you must stay on WordPress, yes for design speed.
Claude does the first pass; you rebuild with native builder elements and finish spacing with a mouse.
Do not paste Claude’s code blocks into Custom HTML and call it done.
